TREE WORK plus
24 Hour Emergency Tree Service

Tree work is extremely dangerous for the untrained or the inexperienced. No matter how easy the task looks, accidents can and do happen . . . beware!

24 Hour Emergency Tree Service The ENGLISH GARDEN Company has been undertaking tree work and tree care since 1974. It was set up initially to allow the management of trees in our gardens, and for our core client base to benefit from this additional service. As the company grew this side of the business grew with it, and now represents around 40% of operations. Insurance cover of £10m is carried for these highly skilled works, and our qualified climbers enjoy the very latest in arboricultural equipment and training.

Tree preservation orders (TPOs) / conservation area permissions:

Any tree with a diameter in excess of 75mm at a trunk height of 1.5 metres will generally be included under comprehensive conservation area cover, with restrictions prohibiting all work on that tree without first gaining the proper permission.

TPOs are placed on individual trees, groups of trees, and even entire woodlands where the protected tree/s are of great aesthetic value locally.

The punishments for non-compliance can run into many thousands of pounds in fines and replacement/s for both the contractor and property owner.

The ENGLISH GARDEN Company provides a complete service in obtaining permissions in writing on behalf of their clients and at no additional cost to the quoted works. Occasionally specifications may have to be amended after application. However, this is unusual as our arborists are fully conversant with both planning strategy and any local environmental concerns.

"We were impressed by the way that your team carried out the work on our weeping willow. They were very professional and treated out property with great respect. Most importantly, they were particularly careful when working in our neighbour’s garden." ~ Alan Dutton

Tree Surgery:

Our arborist will visit you, listen to your needs, and explain the best specification for the works. He will also take into account position, neighbours, restrictions, access, regrowth and budget. Off site he will prepare and forward a detailed and specific written quotation for your perusal and subsequent action.

Tree Felling:

Unfortunate but inevitable, most often on Health & Safety, planning, or landscape management grounds, where it is sometimes the only option. We strive to save specimens wherever possible with surgery or bracing, rather than felling which can have a dramatic effect on the property if close to buildings. On clay soils it can cause the opposite of subsidence, i.e. 'heave', and in these instances our proposal will accommodate safe removal without any threat to surrounding buildings. In addition, larger fellings have a serious impact to the aesthetics of the immediate gardens and locality. Serious consideration should be given before removal is undertaken, and when this is the only sensible option, sensitive replacement planting should form part of the project on environmental grounds.

Stump Removal:

Mechanical removal is the most economic option, using stump-grinding machines with varying access widths. Most stumps can be accessed and removed easily and manual removal is an option, although it can prove expensive on larger stumps. The stump is cut to just above ground level, a stump retardant is applied to kill off any re-growth, and the stump will then rot down naturally with soil retention and benefits to the local habitat.

Hedge Topping / Trimming / Layering:

Hedges that have outgrown their position can be topped out to a reasonable height; the species will dictate the severity of this.

Most deciduous hedges of a certain size can be layed to control height, improve security, and thicken up the growth; this is a highly skilled procedure and must be carried out by trained operatives.

Hedges and topiary can be trimmed to shape on a one-off basis or on an agreed schedule through the season, dependent again on species.

24 Hour Emergency Call Outs:

The ENGLISH GARDEN Company's tree teams are on 24 hour x 7 days a week immediate response call out for tree emergencies where there is risk to safety or property, or where access has been compromised.

Upon receipt of your call one of our climbers will make contact to find out the severity of the problem and discuss the appropriate charges that may apply once the site has been inspected. Under your instruction he will organise suitable manpower and equipment, and immediately attend site to appraise the situation to give a firm quotation, firstly to make the tree safe and then to complete the works (possibly at a later date if he has other incidents to deal with). Please note that we charge a call out fee for this service

Tree Maintenance Agreements - 3 year terms:

Owners of any tree, or group of trees, have a legal obligation on H&S grounds to maintain their trees, with a legal requirement to have knowledge of those trees above that of the layman. Neglected trees are dangerous and can kill, maim and cause serious structural damage to property. If a tree causes damage or injury, the owner, whether private or corporate, is liable, and in a worse-case scenario, could even face manslaughter charges.

The ENGLISH GARDEN Company appreciates that in the real world this responsibility is un-realistic and we have therefore set up a comprehensive tree maintenance service, over a 3 year term.

  • Initially we carry out a comprehensive survey and log all the tree stock.
  • The necessary work is costed covering a 3-year term.
  • A detailed written quotation is forwarded to the client by email.
  • Upon acceptance, the 3 years of work is scheduled into 6 half-yearly service calls.
  • Urgent work is prioritised early on in the term, and on every call a visual inspection is made of the remaining stock to identify any subsequent danger.
  • In the unlikely event of emergency, call outs are free and fully included in this agreement.
  • Payment can be made annually or for the full 3 year term of cover.

Once your agreement is in force, The ENGLISH GARDEN Company takes over all responsibility for the tree stock with no input from the client necessary.

If you have trees and are concerned at their condition and care, you need a maintenance agreement with us to ensure you are fully compliant with the law.
