Designing a garden is very similar to interior house design - you need first to assess what you will require from it. A place for relaxation and escape? An outdoor room for all the family? Informed planting and colour to lift the eye and spirits? Or even a maintenance free installation? Your new garden will have an identity of its own, but only you can decide what that will be. Whatever your requirements the basics are the same - you will need professional help on styles, techniques, current materials, planting schemes, and of course, the costs involved.

English gardens are renowned throughout the world and offer a multitude of sympathetic English styles, harmonious to their surroundings. Cast an eye around you, check out what succeeds locally, and what plant types flourish, and work from there. Regardless of materials used, and whether the style is cottage, classical, Victorian, modern, romantic, potager or art deco, etc., good design starts with the main house, and should be conceived as a single scheme in accord with, and not alien to, the surroundings. We apply this strategy when working in other countries in Europe, each one having its own heritage in garden design.

Two other important elements to consider in the initial plan are subsequent professional aftercare, and of course, budget. Whether you intend to place the aftercare with us or undertake the work yourself, you will need to take this into account when you detail your brief. In regard to budget, you will need to dictate to your designer at the outset the figure you wish to spend on your project in order that we may design a landscape that sensibly fits in with the funding available.

Large landscapes should be designed as one and if funding is not available for the whole entity, then the project should be undertaken in phases to allow harmony and consistency. Plants should be the main focus of your design, and planting schemes are generally a far more economical method of re-designing than major construction works. Our plantsman can advise you on which existing plantings will perform for you, in a specific location. A further point to be noted is the move towards 'slow water' landscaping, where porous lawns, beds, gravel, etc are used rather than the hard surfaces that cause water run-off into storm drains to the detriment of the natural water table, and potentially causing flooding.
